Ministries and Charities
Among the 26 uniquely Catholic ministries and charities in our Diocese that reflect the Light of Christ are:
Life-changing assistance to families, children, victims of domestic violence, people who are elderly, poor, or with disabilities, through the six member agencies of Catholic Community Services. Last year, more than 173,000 people received some form of health, education, dental, social, employment, shelter, transportation and nutrition related service.
Masses, Communion Services, and personal visits to residents in 27 nursing homes, hospices, assisted-living centers through the Pastoral Ministry Program. Sister Carolyn Nicolai and Father Angelo Mastria, along with nearly 100 volunteers from many parishes, bring the presence of Christ and provide comfort and consolation to the elderly and gravely ill.
Masses, prayer services, and one-on-one spiritual counseling in prisons, jails, and detention facilities throughout the Diocese by Detention Ministry and its 75 volunteers. Studies have shown that inmates are less likely to return to prison if they are active in religious services while incarcerated.
Classes in Catholic Doctrine and Spirituality for catechists and youth ministers through the Jordan Ministry Team. The Team's four dedicated members also serve as faculty and facilitators for the Common Formation Program to prepare future Lay Ecclesial Ministers and Deacons from throughout the Diocese. Jordan Ministry Team members provided faith-based formation in most of the parishes and schools in the Diocese last year.
In-service programs and staff development opportunities for teachers and guidance and administrative assistance for our Catholic Schools from the Catholic Schools Office. The Office provides essential support services to the 22 Catholic elementary and six high schools in our Diocese, helping faculty and staff in their responsibilities for the academic and Faith preparation of more than 7,500 students.
